The Deltic Basher is a nostalgic and at times surreal musical journey through the 1970s as seen through the eyes of Edgar Gammidge, who is a young lad who lives with his overbearing mother and rather strange uncle Earnest on Tunnel Rd in Retford beside the east coast main line. When Edgar was a very small child in the late 1960s his night terrors were soothed away by a mysterious haunting sound coming from somewhere outside in the night. As Edgar got a little older he learned that the mysterious soothing sound coming from somewhere out in the night was actually a passing train - but not just any old train these were Deltics - and so begins Edgar's life long obsession with these enigmatic locomotives. As Edgar grows up through the 1970s he learns more about his beloved Deltics that are a constant soundtrack to his life growing up, as he plays on scrap cars, collects old radiograms and valve TV sets from the local rubbish tip. One day Edgar learns from his friend Norman who lives down the street that the days of the Deltics are numbered and they will soon all be scrapped to be replaced by the new intercity 125 high speed train. Edgar and Norman make it their business to ride behind as many Deltics as they possibly can between London Kings Cross and Edinburgh before they are all finally withdrawn and scrapped.
